Welcome back to Kewaunee’s Amazing Spaces competition blog series! We’re excited to take you on a journey through some of the most innovative and inspiring scientific spaces around the globe. Today, we’re highlighting the Petroleum Conversion Research Center at Dhahran Techno Valley Holding Company (DTVC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).
Project Overview
This project involved the development of five labs and a pilot plant area. This amazing space also included a large custom walk-in fume hood measuring 6,000 mm (L) x 2,000 mm (D) to analyze larger-sized products. The facility supports advanced research in petroleum conversion and related fields.
Key Players

Special Considerations
One of the main challenges was transporting and installing the oversized fume hood. Due to insufficient lab entry dimensions, the fume hood had to be dismantled onsite and reassembled inside the lab. Despite these obstacles, the hood was successfully installed, calibrated, and performance-tested in the presence of the end user, ensuring the client’s expectations were fully met.
