Unlike most classroom style labs, these spaces are flooded with natural light and serve as aesthetic elements to the overall building. Lab petals open inward to the atrium and collaboration spaces. Labs have large windows facing into the atrium creating opportunities to discuss science without interrupting experiments. Labs have exterior windows facing the Seattle skyline and Lake Union. The building is truly a work of art with a gallery and color changing lights on the exterior. A Ford dealership occupied the site for eight decades. The new building integrates historic wood and stone elements salvaged from the old building. Some of the top brain researchers in the world have been recruited by the Allen Institute due to the image created by their new building. This institute was launched by Paul G Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and is dedicated to understanding how the human brain works.
